sugar

Grain, nuts and baking products

Sugar is a white, sweet-tasting plant product that can be obtained from sugarcane or sugar beet, for instance. It is mostly labelled as household sugar or crystal sugar. It goes directly into the blood and thus quickly provides energy to the body. However it should be used only in small quantities because of its caries-causing effect and its effect on the blood sugar levels. It hardly contains any vitamins or minerals. In an otherwise balanced diet, however, it is alright to add a little for sweetening desserts or for baking.
